This year, Kukui Camp will be held in Toyama, Japan! It will be the first time the camp is being held outside of Maui.
If this is your first time hearing about Kukui Camp, please visit this page to learn more about the camp and its founder, Akari.
Akari is excited to explore Japan with children from Hawaii and the U.S. mainland who have participated in her past camps on Maui as well as her online programs.
If your child has not participated in any of the above programs, don't worry — any child is welcome to join this camp! What if your child has never studied Japanese? Don't worry; it's not required, and there will be several bilingual staff members and instructors.
Some Kukui Camp graduates who live in Japan will also join us — a great reunion! We are also inviting children from other countries who have evacuated to Japan due to armed conflicts in their home countries.
Akari is grateful to be working with Mika Seki, one of the founders of the General Incorporated Association Little Adventure Camp in Toyama, as well as Hiroko Tamura, the founder of Homing, to make this amazing opportunity possible. (See more about each of them below.)

キャンプの概要
これまでククイキャンプは、ハワイのマウイ島で開催してきましたが、2026年は初めて、日本の富山で開催いたします！
「ククイキャンプって初めて聞いたけど、どんなキャンプなんだろう？」と思われた方は、こちらにククイキャンプが生まれた背景を、そしてこちらに創設者の紹介をまとめていますので、ぜひご覧ください。
円安の影響もあり、日本からハワイへ行くことが簡単ではない今だからこそ、日本の子どもたちがハワイや海外の子どもたちと出会える機会をつくりたい。さらに、海外の子どもたちが日本を訪れて、日本の子どもたちと出会える機会もつくりたい。そんな思いから、この企画を立ち上げました。加えて、母国での武力紛争により日本へ避難してきた子どもたちも、このキャンプへご招待しています。
「うちの子は英語（もしくは日本語）が話せないけど、大丈夫かな？」とご心配いただく必要はございません。全く話せなくても、ぜひご参加ください。バイリンガルのスタッフがサポートいたします。
私たちがいつも大切にしているのは、「子どもたちが世界と出会うことで、この世界に暮らすみんなの幸せを願うようになること」です。そのためにできることを、日々考えながら活動を続けています。
この機会を実現するにあたり、富山の一般社団法人「小さな冒険学舎」の創設者のお一人である関 美佳さん、そして「Homing」代表の田村 洋子さんとご一緒できることに、心から感謝しています（お二人の詳細は以下をご覧ください）。

Our Philosophies
Background knowledge: Kukui is the state tree of Hawai’i, and because the kukui nut is rich in oil and was traditionally used for candles, the Hawaiian word “kukui” means light.
We value two things in this camp.
First, at the heart of Kukui Camp is a simple belief: every child and every person has their own strengths and potential, and life events often carry lessons and insights. Kindness and compassion exist in everyone — sometimes they are harder to see because of fear or uncertainty, but they do not disappear, just like the sun remains behind the rain clouds.
We encourage children, when they meet people and have new experiences, to look for what is good in others and for the message or lesson an experience may offer. We call these "kukui." By doing so, they start to see more of another person's "kukui," and the observer's heart also grows warmer and stronger.
Second, we value “believing in children.”
When we feel the urge to step in, give advice, or help right away, we remind ourselves: “Hold on. Let’s see what happens.”
Children may have less experience than adults, but they are capable of far more than we often imagine. By trusting their abilities and creating the time and space for them to explore and show what they can do, we can help them thrive — and that is our role.
That’s why we don’t pack our two-night, three-day camp schedule too tightly. We give them ample time. We want children to fully enjoy what excites them. And when conflicts arise between friends, we don’t cut things short by saying, “Time’s up—just apologize to each other.” Instead, we value giving them the time to talk things through.
Rather than adults giving instructions one after another, we want children to have the chance to ask themselves, “What do I want to do next?”
Watching children begin to take action on their own in those open moments—and being there for that instant—is our greatest joy.
In the past, we’ve heard from some parents or guardians that it felt less “full” than camps with a tightly mapped-out schedule, and they wondered whether it was worth the cost.
We understand why it might look that way at first, but in reality, it takes a team of experienced instructors to hold the space for that kind of spontaneity. It would be easier to run a program by controlling the environment and limiting variables, but we choose not to take the easy path. Instead, we offer a child-centered approach.
We want to create a place where children discover and share one another's "kukui" — and we do this by stepping back, staying present, and giving them space to explore.
私たちの理念
背景：ハワイの州木であるククイの木のナッツは、キャンドルとして使われることから、ハワイ語の「ククイ」には、灯（ともしび）、光、ランプという意味があります。
このキャンプでは、二つのことを大切にしています。
一つ
すべての子どもや人には、その人ならではの良さや可能性があり、人生の出来事にも、学びや気づきにつながる側面があります。
誰の中にも優しさや思いやりがあります。時には恐れや不安で表に出にくいことがあっても、雨雲の向こうにお日様があるように、それ自体がなくなるわけではありません。
ククイキャンプでは、子どもたちが人や物事に出会うとき、相手の良いところや、出来事から受け取れるメッセージに目を向けることを大切にしています。このキャンプではそれらを「ククイ」と呼んでいます。
そうすることで、相手の「ククイ」がよりよく見えるようになり、見つめる側の心も温かく、強くなっていきます。
二つ
「子どもたちを信じる」ことを、私たちは大切にしています。
つい口出ししたくなるとき、手を出して助けたくなるときこそ、「ちょっと待てよ。まずは様子を見てみよう」と自分たちに言い聞かせます。
子どもは大人より経験が少ないかもしれません。けれど、私たちが思う以上にたくさんのことができます。その力を信じ、子どもたちが存分に探求し、発揮できる時間と場をつくること。それが私たちの役割です。
だからこそ、2泊3日のスケジュールはぎちぎちに詰め込みません。何か面白いことが起こるための余白を残します。ワクワクすることには思いきりワクワクしてほしい。友だちと揉めごとがあったとき、時間だから、「はいお互い謝って」と切り上げず、子どもたちが解決する時間を大切にしたい。
大人が次々に指示を出すのではなく、「次は何をしようか？」と自分で考えるチャンスを確保する。
余白の中で子どもたちが自ら動き出す — その瞬間に立ち会えることが、私たちの何よりの喜びです。
綿密にスケジュールが組まれたキャンプと比べると「内容が薄い」と感じられ、費用に見合うのか疑問に思われる保護者の方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。
そのお気持ちも分かります。しかし実際には、安全性を確保しつつ、子どもたちの自発性を受け止め、尊重するには、経験豊かな指導者チームが必要です。スケジュールを前もって決めて管理し、変動要因を減らしてプログラムを運営するほうが容易ですが、私たちはそれよりも、子どもたちの意思を真ん中に据えたアプローチをしています。
子どもたちが互いの「ククイ」を見つけ、分かち合える場に。私たちは子どもを信じ、余白のある時間を大切にします。
What do children do?
For the exact schedule, please take a look below, which outlines each day's timeline.
To give you an overall idea: aside from mealtimes and other designated times, the children will mostly decide what they would like to do. We provide several outdoor activity options — from building a raft to constructing a bamboo jungle gym and more — and while we supervise for safety, the children choose what to do and in what order.
We will also make sure that children from various backgrounds have opportunities to interact, so they do not stay only with children from the same background.
Each group will also have a chance to present where they come from and share about their local culture.
One evening, the children will do a case study and learn about a child who made a difference in the world by following their kukui. We will discuss what challenges that child may have faced and how they overcame them.
At the end of camp, each child will reflect on what they learned about their own kukui and may share if they would like to.
子どもたちは何をするのでしょうか？
詳しいスケジュールについては、以下に詳細がありますので、そちらをご覧ください。
全体像としては、食事やお手伝いなどの時間を除き、子どもたち自身が「何をしたいか」を中心に過ごします。いかだ作りや竹のジャングルジム作りなど、いくつかの屋外アクティビティをこちらで用意し、安全面を見守りながら進めますが、何をするか、どの順番で行うかは子どもたちが選びます。
また、同じ背景の子ども同士だけで終始過ごしてしまうことがないように、さまざまな背景を持つ子どもたちが交流できるよう工夫しています。
さらに、各グループが自分たちの出身地や地域の文化について発表する機会も設けます。
ある夜には、自分の「ククイ」を大切にして行動し、世界に変化をもたらした子どもの実話を学びます。その子がどのような困難に直面し、どのように乗り越えたのかを一緒に考えます。
キャンプの最後には、子ども一人ひとりが自分の「ククイ」について学んだことを振り返り、希望する子はみんなの前で共有します。
Is this a language-learning camp?
This camp is not primarily focused on teaching a language. What we most want children to experience here is a genuine connection of hearts and minds. We believe that trying to communicate with kindness and consideration, and making an effort to understand what the other person is trying to say helps us build a world filled with compassion.
That said, over the course of three days and two nights—sharing mealtimes, staying together, and taking part in a variety of activities—children are naturally immersed in other languages, and authentic language learning takes place.
Here is a scene we have witnessed many times over the years as children from different language backgrounds interact. A child will first speak to another child in their own language. The child being spoken to will pick up the meaning from the situation and what’s happening around them, as well as the other child’s facial expressions and gestures, and reply in their own language. Before long, from an adult’s perspective, you may wonder, “How is this conversation even working?”—yet this heartwarming exchange somehow takes shape, and the children happily begin to play together.
There are times when their “guesses” don’t match and they don’t quite understand each other. Even then, if we simply watch, the children often notice the misunderstanding and adjust on their own.
And eventually, they begin to understand the other language through context and respond in it. The joy they feel when they successfully communicate in a new language is beyond words. Every time we witness that moment, we find ourselves thinking, “What a wonderful scene to behold.”
Of course, our staff will also keep an eye on the situation and, when needed, offer gentle guidance. For example, saying, “If you want to say ‘Pass it to me,’ you can say, ‘Sore chodai.’” Drawing on our many years of teaching experience, we aim to support the children with just the right amount of guidance at the right time, depending on what each moment calls for.
言語を学ぶキャンプなのでしょうか？
言語を学ぶことに重きを置いたキャンプではありません。私たちがこのキャンプで子どもたちにいちばん体験してほしいのは、「心が通い合うこと」です。相手を思いやりながら伝えようとすること、そして相手が何を言おうとしているのかを理解しようとすることは、優しさにあふれた世界を築いていくことにつながると信じています。
とはいえ、2泊3日を共に過ごし、寝食をともにし、さまざまなアクティビティに参加する中で、子どもたちは自然と他の言語に触れ、実践的な言語の学びが自然に生まれます。
ここで、私たちが長年、言語の異なる子どもたちが交流する様子を見守る中で、何度も目にしてきた光景をご紹介します。子どもたちはまず、自分の言語で相手に話しかけます。話しかけられた子どもは、その場の状況や前後の流れ、相手の表情やジェスチャーから意味をくみ取り、自分の言語で返します。すると、大人から見ると「どうして会話が成り立っているのだろう？」と思うほど、微笑ましいコミュニケーションが自然に成立し、楽しそうに遊び始めるのです。
また、お互いの「推測」がうまくかみ合わず、意思疎通がうまくいかないこともあります。それでもそのまま見守っていると、子どもたちは誤解に気づき、自分たちで軌道修正していきます。
そしてやがて、相手の言語の意味を状況の中で理解し、相手の言語で答えるようになります。新しい言語で意思疎通ができたときの喜びは、言葉では言い尽くせません。その瞬間を目の当たりにするたびに、「なんて素晴らしい場面に立ち会わせてもらっているのだろう」と感じます。
もちろん、私たちスタッフも状況を見ながら、たとえば「『それをこっちに渡して』って言いたいときは、“Pass it to me” って言うんだよ」といった形で、必要に応じてさりげなく声をかけることがあります。長年の指導経験を生かし、時と場に合わせて、必要なときにちょうどよい加減でサポートしていきたいと考えています。

Please note that the schedule may change as the dates get closer. For example, we are still coordinating with a local school in Toyama to confirm which day will work best for our visit. If there are any changes, we will update the schedule on this page.
Please also note that the dates listed in Japanese are from Friday, October 9 to Sunday, October 11. This is because the children joining from Japan will be joining us for the weekend. For children coming from outside of Japan, the full program runs from Sunday, October 4 to Monday, October 12.

About Homestay
We are collaborating with Hiroko from Homing to provide an amazing homestay experience. There is more information about Hiroko and Homing below, so please take a look.
Here, we will address some questions you may have.
The duration is two nights.
The following meals will be provided by the host family. We can accommodate any food allergies or dietary preferences (vegetarian, etc.).

Homestay is not mandatory, although we highly recommend it as it is often the best way to immerse yourself in the culture.
You can choose to have only your child participate in the homestay while you stay at a hotel, or you could stay with your child at the host family's home, if there are enough host families who can accommodate both an adult and a child. (Japanese homes can be small, so space may sometimes be an issue.)
Japanese homes are not as large as American homes, so please be aware that you may be sharing a bathroom with other family members.

About Kureha Youth Outdoor Learning Center
It is conveniently located just a 20-minute drive from Toyama Station, yet it is surrounded by beautiful nature where children can safely explore.
Akari visited the site in June 2025 to see it with her own eyes. The facility was beautifully maintained and features a small creek, a pond, a forest, and a field—making it a perfect place for children to explore. Akari felt at home right away.
Mika has been hosting children’s camps at this facility for years, so she knows the site well.
Meals will be provided by Kureha Youth Outdoor Learning Center. If any participant has food allergies, we will coordinate with the facility staff in advance to ensure that suitable alternative options are available for that child. Menus will be announced close to the camp date.
Children will sleep in the bunk beds shown in the photos, with a maximum of 8 children per room. Boys and girls will be placed in separate rooms. The instructors stay in the next room, so we can assist immediately if any needs arise.

Yes, there will be several bilingual staff members and instructors to assist. The level of Japanese proficiency (even if your child has not studied any) is not an issue. If your child is ready to explore a new world, they are welcome to join!

We kindly ask that you allow your child the opportunity to be independent for just two nights. Parents/guardians will stay at nearby accommodations.

Yes, absolutely. Even if they are having a great time during the day, some children may feel a little homesick at night. We consider that feeling a natural part of the camp experience, and our staff—along with camp graduates (high school student volunteers)—will be there to support them.

In principle, we ask that children do not bring money, smartphones, other electronic devices, or valuables.
However, we understand that some parents/guardians may want their child to have a phone for emergencies. If your child does bring one, staff will collect it at check-in and keep it securely during camp. It will be returned at dismissal.
If an emergency arises for a parent/guardian, please reach out to Akari and, we will connect you with your child right away. -
If your child is injured or becomes ill, we will contact the parent/guardian and consult with you on the next steps (e.g., visiting a clinic or hospital, having you pick up your child, or having your child rest in a separate room).
If we determine that the situation is urgent, we will take necessary action immediately—such as providing first aid or calling an ambulance—before contacting the parent/guardian.

Unless there is heavy rain or severe weather, one unique feature of our camp is that we continue outdoor activities even in the rain—wearing rain gear. However, because wet conditions can be slippery, safety is our top priority. Depending on the situation, we may switch to programs that can be held indoors at the facility (such as in the gym).

Yes. We will hold a Zoom orientation about a month before the camp, and we ask you to join.

富山駅から車で約20分とアクセスが良い一方で、周囲は豊かな自然に囲まれており、子どもたちが安心してのびのびと探索できる環境です。
ククイキャンプ代表である上岡安佳里は、2025年6月に現地を実際に訪れ、自分の目で施設を確認してきました。施設はとてもきれいに整備されており、小川、池、森、広場がそろっていて、子どもたちが探検するのに最適な場所だと感じました。到着してすぐに「ここはとても落ち着くなぁ」と感じました。
一般社団法人小さな冒険学舎の関美佳さんは、この施設で長年にわたり子ども向けキャンプを開催してきたため、施設のことをよく把握されています。
食事について
食事は呉羽青少年自然の家が用意してくださいます。食品アレルギーのある参加者がいた場合、私どもは事前に施設担当者と打ち合わせをし、その子が食べられる代替オプションをご用意いたします。献立はキャンプ日程が近づきましたらお知らせいたします。
お部屋について
子どもたちは、写真に見られる二段ベッドで就寝します。1部屋の最大人数は8名で、男女は別々の部屋となります。インストラクターは隣の部屋に滞在しますので、何かございましたらすぐに対応できます。

はい、大丈夫です。昼間はどれだけ楽しくても、夜になると少し寂しくなってしまうこともあるかと思います。そうした気持ちもキャンプの一部として大切にしながら、スタッフとキャンプ卒業生の子どもたち（高校生ボランティア）でサポートいたします。

お金やスマートフォンなどのデバイス、また貴重品の持参は、原則禁止とさせていただきます。ただし、万が一の連絡手段として持たせたいという保護者の方のお気持ちも理解いたしますので、やむを得ずお持ちになる場合は、受付時にスタッフがお預かりいたします。解散時に返却いたします。

大雨などの荒天でない限り、雨天でも雨具を着用して野外活動を行うのが、このキャンプのユニークなポイントです。ただし、雨天時は足元が滑りやすくなるため、安全面を最優先し、状況に応じて施設内の屋内施設（体育館など）で実施できるプログラムに切り替える場合もあります。

万が一お子様が怪我をしたり病気になった場合、保護者に連絡の上、その後の対応（病院へ行く・迎えにきていただく・別室で療養するなど）について相談させていただきます。
緊急を要する状況とみなした場合には、保護者への連絡よりも先に、応急処置を施したり救急車を呼んだりするなど、必要な対応を取らせていただきます。

Little Adventure Camp
Akari met Mika Seki, one of the founders of the General Incorporated Association Little Adventure Camp in Toyama, on Zoom in September 2024.
Akari immediately felt a strong rapport with Mika and resonated with her philosophy on how to interact with children.
In June 2025, Akari visited Mika and the Kureha Youth Outdoor Learning Center in Toyama. After seeing the site and speaking with Mika in person, she felt confident about holding a children's camp there in collaboration with Mika.

ククイキャンプの創設者であるわたくし、上岡安佳里は、2024年9月に、富山の一般社団法人小さな冒険学舎の創設者の一人である関 美佳さんと出会いました。

About Hiroko & Homing
I, Akari Ueoka, met Hiroko Tamura, the founder of Homing, an organization based in Saitama, in August 2024.
When a Hawaii baseball team traveled to Japan on tour, I accompanied them as an interpreter. On that occasion, Homing arranged homestays for the young players, and I got to spend three days with Hiroko.
I was truly impressed by the meticulous care Hiroko provides for both the host families and the guests. Her thoughtful attention to detail gave me a strong sense of reassurance.
She offers consistent support before, during, and after the stay for everyone involved. It is clear that she genuinely enjoys cross-cultural exchange and is sincerely committed to contributing to it.
About Homing and Hiroko Tamura
Homing is an international homestay matching service that connects children from around the world with families in Japan through cross-cultural exchange and homestay experiences.
For Kukui Camp in Toyama in October 2026, Homing will be responsible for providing participants with an unforgettable homestay experience. During the two-night, three-day stay in Toyama, time spent with local host families will be a valuable opportunity for children to experience everyday life and culture in Japan firsthand and to enjoy connecting with one another across languages.

わたくし上岡は、2024年8月に、埼玉を拠点とする「ホーミング」の創設者である田村ひろこさんと出会いました。
あるハワイの野球チームが日本遠征をする際、私は通訳として同行いたしました。その際、ホーミングさんが野球少年たちのホームステイをオーガナイズしてくださいました。そして現地では2泊3日、一緒に過ごすことができました。
ホストファミリー側と、ホストファミリーに受け入れてもらう側の双方へのケアを、きめ細かく、細部にまで配慮されている様子に大変感心するとともに、大きな安心感をいただきました。
